Lisbon Hotels
Lisbon is the capital city of Portugal and is set against the spectacular backdrop of Sao Jorge Castle. “The city on seven hills” is filled with an array of museums, monuments and magnificent architecture such as the Estrela Basilica Church and Belem Tower. Wowcher offer a range of hotels from luxurious 5* properties to comfortable 3* tourist hotels to suit everyone’s tastes.
With flight times of less than three hours from UK airports, Lisbon is easily accessible by air. Unusually, Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport is located within the city meaning the central districts are only a short journey away, less than 20 minutes by metro. There are also bus connections and even a cycle path!
Belem Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the mouth of the Rover Tagus and is classed as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. Walking tours to the tower include the main sights of Lisbon as well as skip-the-line access to the St Jerome Monastery, also a World Heritage Site and Lisbon’s premier attraction.
Pena Palace and Sintra Tours take in the splendor of the “most romantic town in Portugal” and also the Romanticist castle above the town. Pena Palace is also one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal, built in an interesting mix of styles and offers incredible views across the Pena Park to the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Sintra traces it’s origins all the way back to the Bronze Age and also includes buildings from the Moorish and Medieval periods. Nestled within the Sintra Mountains and Sintra-Cascais Nature Park, there is lots to explore.
Lisbon’s trams are an icon of the city as well as being a practical way to get around the “City of Seven Hills”. Known as “Americanos” after the trams in San Francisco, they wind their way through the narrow cobbled streets in the south and west of the city. Although the building of the metro system has replaced many of the lines, a journey on a traditional tram makes a visit to Lisbon really memorable.
These are just some of Lisbon’s highlights, make sure you sample the delicious local cuisine including the famous Pastel de Belem the recipe for this pastry is a closely guarded secret!
