What is a Shiatsu Massage?
A shiatsu massage is an alternative type of massage originating from Japan. 'Shi' means finger and 'atsu' means pressure, which has led to suggestions that it's similar to acupressure. Manual pressure is applied to specific points on your body in an aim to relieve tension and pain. This Japanese bodywork is used in traditional Chinese medicine. It's one of the best massages you can have if you're looking to feel relaxed!
What Happens During a Shiatsu Massage?
Various techniques are used by the masseur during a shiatsu massage. Firstly, they look at your tongue and pulses to work out where your imbalances lie. The belief is that the body works as a whole, and so the whole body will be targeted here, and not individual parts. This will include stretching, holding, pressing down with palms, thumbs, elbows and knees. There is more gentle pressure applied here, as it's noted as being a combination of a massage and acupuncture. With a shiatsu massage, there is also more focus on your breathing. Emotions are released and the body will go into a state of calm.
What Should I Wear For a Shiatsu Massage?
It's best to wear looser clothing generally when you're going for a massage. Tracksuits, jogging bottoms and socks are perfect and will help to keep you warm during your session also. As the massage is done fully clothed, your therapist will not really need to access your skin so you're pretty free to wear whatever feels comfortable for you. From yoga and workout pants to jeans, you name it, you can wear it!
Benefits of Shiatsu Massages
Shiatsu treatments offer many benefits including replacing energy back in the body, which is particularly good for people who feel fatigued or generally weak. It's a great technique for reducing anxiety and stress, as well as depression and any tension and tightness you're feeling. If you suffer from tension headaches, it's also a good way to suppress the pain. Like most massages and treatments, it should relax you and make you feel more comfortable!
What Happens After a Shiatsu Massage?
You may feel a little tender or sore where you've been worked on, but as the pressure used is generally light, it shouldn't be too bad! It is also a sign that the treatment is working. Similar with other massages, the cleansing can be helped along by staying hydrated and making sure you drink plenty of water!
Who Should Not Have a Shiatsu Massage?
Masseurs will be able to tell you if this type of massage is not suitable for you, but generally it's safe for most people. If you have any broken bones, burns, rashes, a fever or uncontrolled diabetes, it's advised not to receive this treatment. People who have a limited range of movement, have recently had surgery or have poor immune systems.
