Rome Three-Day Itinerary

Rome is an ancient city full of history and landmarks that captivate and inspire. Home to many talented artists and architects over the years, there are plenty of breath-taking sights. And to top it all off, there are many mouth-watering Italian dishes you can try. To help you fit everything into your next holiday to Rome, we have put together the perfect three-day itinerary. You'll be able to see all the top spots, enjoy delicious bites and relax too! Here is what we recommend for the best three-day trip in the eternal city.

Day One

After your flight, finding your way to your hotel and dropping off your luggage, a chill first day is the perfect way to start your holiday.

Kick off your relaxation under the Italian sun with exploration of the beautiful piazzas in the city centre.

Begin with one of the most popular neighbourhoods in Rome, Piazza di Spagna, a square home to the famous Spanish Steps and captivating historical buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Here you can take the perfect photos for your Instagram story on the boat-shaped steps and enjoy some of the best views of Rome at the top of Pincian Hill.

Next, take a nine minute walk to the largest fountain in the city, the Trevi Fountain. Enjoy the breathtaking sight and throw a coin into the fountain to guarantee your return to Rome (trust us, at this point you’ll already be planning your next trip!)

Grab yourself a delicious Italian coffee from one of the nearby cafès before starting a 13 minute walk to the charming Piazza Navona. Here you can view three baroque-style fountains, Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Fontana del Moro and Fontana del Nettuno before choosing one of the restaurants that line the piazza for a tasty dinner.

Before you head back to your hotel, take a four minute walk to the Pantheon to witness the captivating sight of it lit up under the night sky.

Day Two

Vatican City is packed full of museums and sights, as well as long queues, making it best to visit on a day when you don’t have any flights eating into your holiday time.

Make sure to head there early and don’t visit on a Sunday as the museums are closed (unless it’s the last Sunday of the month when entry is free - but be prepared for large queues!)

Upon arriving in Vatican City, head to St Peter’s Square where you take in the enchanting view before joining the queue to enter one of the largest churches in the world, St Peter’s Basilica. Inside you can view the awe-inspiring interior architecture as well as several pieces of art. Don’t miss out on more impressive views of Rome and climb to the top of the Basilica Dome before leaving.

Following this, head to the Vatican Museums and view one of the largest collections of art and artifacts in the world. Admire statues from Ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome, as well as medieval ceramics and mosaics.

Once you’ve taken in the sights of the Vatican Museums, you can enter the Sistine Chapel and take in works from legendary artists such as Michelangelo. Inside, you can see the famous mural paintings that cover the walls and ceiling, including ‘The Creation of Adam’.

We then recommend making a stop for lunch at one of the delicious eateries around Vatican City to enjoy a peaceful moment away from the crowds.

Continuing your discovery of Michelangelo’s works, journey to Piazza del Campidoglio which was designed by the artist. Take pictures of the Capitoline Wolf sculpture which depicts Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. If you’re still in the mood for museums after your Vatican trip, head to the Capitoline Museums where you can view more ancient art.

To end the day, travel to Campo dei Fiori where you can find a mouth-watering restaurant for dinner and indulge in some holiday drinks.

Day Three

The third day of your trip is the perfect time to explore Imperial Rome, otherwise known as the sights of Ancient Rome, before your flight home.

Start your day with a bang and head straight to the iconic Colosseum, where you can wander the stands or explore the labyrinth below. Right next door to the Colosseum is the Roman Forum, full of the remains of ancient temples for you to tour.

To finish, take in the city of Rome for a final time on a 30 minute walk to Trastevere, where you can have your final Italian meal of the trip in one of the most charming neighbourhoods in Rome.

If you still have time before your flight, take a trip to Villa Borghese, where you can stroll in nature, appreciate more art in the Borghese Gallery or go to Rome Zoo and feed adorable animals!
